The backstory
Techno Exports was founded in the year 1991 by Sri. Chittayil Sadasivan Suresh. The backstory that set the launchpad for the company dates back to the decline of the erstwhile Soviet Union. Lada, the largest car manufacturer in Russia, had been procuring spare components from India for a while and our founder, Mr. Suresh, had been working with the Indian firm supplying components to them, having completed his graduation from Russia. This business contact led to a turning point when Lada sent him an unusual inquiry : Curled Coir.
Humblest of the beginnings
Post the decline of Soviet Union, the Russian company was looking for new suppliers to procure machine-twisted coir fibre, the humble curled coir, for manufacturing seats for their cars – around 3000 of which were awaiting seats. The coir industry in India and Sri Lanka was in its infancy and finding a credible supplier was a needle-in-the-haystack situation. This was the decisive point for us, when the middleman himself decided to be the supplier. Having got the green lights from the buyer, 1991 saw the birth of Techno Exports, a humble trading firm.
The flight to victory
The requirement was huge, and moreover, time-bound. The raw materials were hand-picked from all over south India. The exigency of the requirement led the buyer to send a chartered flight to pick up the consignment. Little did we know then that the largest commercial cargo flight of those days from Antonov of Russia was going to land at the then Madras, now Chennai, for the first time ever, to pick up our very first consignment. Our flight to victory!
Moving up the ladder
Having set a strong foothold in trading, we slowly ventured into manufacturing. Our first factory was set up in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu in 1994. The prime focus area of Techno Exports was the engineering applications of Coir. The machine-twisted coir fibre is mainly used in the manufacturing of car seats, mattresses, ac filters and rubberized coir. We also supplied coir fibre bales which finds application in ac filters, water filters and wall packing for thermal insulation.
In 1996, we also started manufacturing coco peat growbags though the market was only in the nascent stages then. Coco peat was then considered more like a waste left after the extraction of fibre and it was a common sight to see piles of peat being burnt off. It was only in the early 2000s that the world explored the possibilities of coco peat in cultivation. Realizing the market potential of coco peat, our entire business of coco peat was later handed over to our sister concerns, Fibre Family and Fiber Family Products Pvt Ltd, taking the legacy forward.
We also started exporting door mats in 1998 and rubberized coir sheets in 2008. Today, we are an ISO 9001:2015 certified Manufacturer and Star Certified Export House recognized nationally for manufacturing and exporting coir products to Europe, America, Middle East and the Far East. Currently, we deal in the entire spectrum of coir products including industrial coir, rubberized coir, door mats, coco shells and coir garden articles to decorative coir bird-nests.
Awards and accolades
Within 7 years post the establishment of the company, the first national recognition came our way – The Government Of India’s National Award for The Best Export Performance in Curled Coir – in 1998. We won this award consecutively from 1998 till 2014 when this award was discontinued by the government.
In 2008, we were awarded for The Best Export Performance in Rubberized Coir. We also won the National Awards for the Best Overall Export Performance among Small and Medium Exporters in 2010 and 2011.
